You choose between SEO consultants by settling one question before you look at anybody’s price, whether you are buying advice or buying work that ships. Everything else follows from that answer. Price will not settle it for you, because in a poll of 439 providers reported by GoodFirms, consultants said they charge about $3,250 a month against about $3,209 for agencies.
This page is for you if you are hiring one. If you arrived looking at salaries, courses or how to become one, it is the wrong page. The cost of getting this wrong is quiet. A good consultant hands you a correct plan, nobody on your side has the hours to build it, and three quarters later you hold a document and the same site.
Redefine Web is an agency. An agency is one of the three routes weighed up here, so we have a commercial reason to want a consultant to look like the worse buy, and to sell you a website design and SEO package instead. Here is the tell. Every time this page compares the two, check which quality of each it assumed. A good agency set against an overloaded one-person operation is marketing, and you should throw that section out.
What SEO consultants hand you, and who is expected to build it
Strip the adjectives and consultant seo services come down to five deliverables. A technical audit with a prioritized fix list. On-page recommendations, page by page. A keyword and content plan with briefs. A link approach. A measurement setup with a monthly read.
Here is the line nobody else writes down. Most of that arrives as instructions. The audit names the fix, it does not deploy the fix. The plan produces briefs, not published pages. What seo services consultants mostly sell is senior judgment by the hour, and those hours go into deciding what to do rather than doing it.
Some do implement. They hold your CMS access, push the change and bill the time. Advising and implementing are two products sold under one word at a similar price, and the word on the invoice will not tell you which one you bought.
Go down the proposal and ask who types each line. If most of it comes back to your developer, you are buying a plan, and a plan needs somebody with hours to spend. Our guide to choosing search engine optimization consultants covers the same role under its longer name.
Why an agency is telling you how to hire a consultant
Run the search again and count the results with nothing to sell. Sales pages, a course provider, a marketplace, a video about becoming an SEO, and lists of thirteen names with no criteria. Naming a conflict does not remove it.
What the conflict does here is predictable. The comparison gets rigged by quality, so a competent firm is measured against an overworked individual, and the situations that would send you elsewhere get written so narrowly that no real reader meets them.
So take the rule rather than our word. Every comparison below sets a good consultant against a good agency, and where it fails to, it has broken its own test. The one thing we will not claim is that this page has no side. It has ours, declared at the top.
We could also be mistaken for the thing you are shopping for. Redefine Web is a team, not one person. If you decide a consultant is right for you, hiring us by accident is the expensive version of that mistake.
Consultant, agency or your own hire, the three question fit test
Answer three questions before you take a single call. They route you rather than score anybody, and two of the three can send you elsewhere.
| The question | Buy a consultant if | Buy something else if |
|---|---|---|
| Who implements on your side, and for how many hours | A named person holds protected hours, so what you lack is direction | Nobody holds hours. Buy an agency, or a consultant who bills for typing |
| Can you name the problem, or only that the numbers are flat | You cannot name it. Buy a paid diagnosis with no retainer attached | You can name it. Buy from whoever does the work |
| A fixed piece of work, or a channel you run for years | It ends. A migration, a launch, a recovery, bought as a scoped project | It runs for years. Buy a supplier reachable in year two |
Question one disqualifies people, so be honest. Hours on your side means hours that already exist in somebody’s week and are defended, not hours your marketing manager will find. If your developer gets to it when the release schedule allows, a plan-only engagement produces a backlog, and the consultant is not the reason.
Question three is about duration. An SEO consulting company that arrives for a fixed engagement and leaves has to hand something over, and the handover is the deliverable.
What an SEO consultant costs, and why they are not the cheap option
Here is the number this topic runs on, and it points the opposite way to your assumption. In a poll of 439 SEO service providers reported by GoodFirms, consultants said they charge about $3,250 a month and agencies said about $3,209. Those two retainers are effectively level.

Read the survey for what it is. Self-reported and supply side, what sellers say they bill, not audited invoices and not what a buyer paid. Its value is the comparison between three models measured one way, not any single figure.
| What you are buying | The published figure, and its source | What it hides |
|---|---|---|
| A consultant on retainer | About $3,250 a month, self-reported by consultants in the same poll of 439 providers | Whether the hours include implementation |
| An agency on retainer | About $3,209 a month, self-reported by agencies in the same poll | How many people share it |
| A freelancer on retainer | Below both, in the same poll | Which workstream you fund |
| Any of the three, hourly | $111 average, one in ten over $150, same poll | What a senior hour adds |
| A one-off project | $2,501 to $5,000 most common in that poll, $1,500 to $5,000 in Entrepreneur’s fee guide | Whether it ends at a document |
The genuinely cheaper route in that data is a freelancer, a third option most people shopping for one senior person were not weighing. With consultant and agency level, cost cannot be your deciding criterion.
Mike Khorev, a consultant who publishes his own rate card, lists SEO pricing starting at $3,500 a month, above both survey averages.
What is in an SEO services package, and what a cheap tier leaves out
Most independents sell a tiered package and a custom scope, and the tier exists to make buying easy rather than to fit you. Read any set of seo services packages as a list of what was removed to reach the price.
A bottom tier keeps the reporting and a small content allowance, and drops everything that eats senior time. Technical work past a checklist. A full crawl. Anything needing access to your stack. Digital PR. None of it is listed as absent, because a package is written as inclusions.
So do the subtraction. Divide the tier price by the $111 average hourly rate GoodFirms reports. Entrepreneur’s low-end retainer band, $251 to $500 a month, buys two to five hours, which does not contain a technical audit, four content briefs and a strategy call.
A custom scope beats a tier whenever your problem is not the standard one. A migration, a hundred thousand URLs, two brands and one team. Good seo experts design custom packages for those cases and charge for the scoping conversation, because scoping is the work. For what each tier holds across the market, our piece on SEO pricing packages goes further.
How to check that one person can carry your account
A firm absorbs a busy month by moving work between people. One person has a week with a fixed number of hours in it, and every client competes for the same week. Check that with arithmetic.

Divide the monthly retainer by the $111 average hourly rate GoodFirms reports. At the poll’s own consultant average, $3,250 divided by $111 is about twenty-nine hours a month, under seven hours a week. Do it with your own number. On Entrepreneur’s reported high-end retainer band, $2,501 is about twenty-three hours and $5,000 is about forty-five. Those hours cover calls, reporting, the crawl, briefs and reviewing drafts, so ask for the split by activity.
Then ask about load, phrased around their week rather than an assigned individual. How many accounts are you carrying this quarter. Five accounts at twenty-nine hours each is one hundred and forty-five hours a month, against a full-time month of roughly one hundred and sixty. Six at that size is more than one person has, unless some are smaller or somebody else does part of the work. Either answer is fine unless it goes unsaid.
Tooling is the same question. A professional seo services company spreads a crawler, a rank tracker and a link index across many accounts, while one person carries that stack on one revenue line. Ask what they run, who pays for it and whether you keep the project data. Our comparison of what an SEO software company gives you is where to check the answer.
Ten questions for SEO consultants that a bench would answer differently
Send these in writing before the call. Each carries the reply that should end it, the half most guides leave out. Every question exists because the supplier is one person, and an seo expert company with a bench answers each of them differently.
| Ask this | The reply that ends the call |
|---|---|
| Which lines on this scope do you type yourself | We will work closely with your developers |
| Who holds my account if you are ill for two weeks | That has not come up |
| Is any of this subcontracted, and to which firm | I have a network I draw on |
| What does your working week look like | I am always available |
| How much of this retainer goes on reporting | It varies month to month |
| What is in the handover pack | I would put something together |
| What happens to my project in your tools | You would not need it |
| Which part of this are you weakest at | I cover the full stack |
| If my in-house person leaves, does this still work | We would carry on as normal |
| What is the longest you were unreachable last year | I check my email on holiday |
Read the replies for names, numbers and constraints, not enthusiasm. Questions one, four and eight tell you more about what an seo expert does all day than any deck from an seo experts company.
What a free SEO consultation is really for
A free consultation is a qualification call. The person on the other end is working out your budget, your urgency, whether you can approve work, and whether your site has a problem they are good at. Knowing that changes how you spend the half hour.
What it is not is an audit. A free seo consultant runs a quick tool pass, names two or three visible faults and stops, because the work that matters takes hours nobody has paid for. If you are offered a full audit for nothing, ask how many hours went into it. Under two hours finds symptoms, not causes.
Get value from it anyway. Ask what they would look at first and why, then what they would need from you before they could answer properly. That shows whether they diagnose or recite.
Do a slice of this yourself first. Search Console, a free crawl and a page speed test tell you whether your problem is visible or structural. Our rundown of free SEO tools sets out where the free tier stops, and if the audit is what you want to buy, our guide to how to conduct a website audit covers what a thorough one contains. An AI assistant produces something shaped like an audit from a pasted page and stays blind to anything needing a crawl. Use it to prepare questions, not answer them.
Red flags when the entire supplier is one person
Five of these cannot be said about a firm with staff. Two hit us as hard, and those two are marked, because a flag list that only indicts the other side is a sales page.
- No named cover. Ask who holds your account for two weeks and get a name. That has never happened is not a plan, it is a coin toss.
- One price for two jobs. A proposal promising senior strategy and produced output at one monthly figure describes two roles, and one person cannot do both at volume.
- Silent subcontracting. Work passed to a firm you were not told about is common and not automatically bad. Finding out afterwards is. Ask who else touches the account.
- A client count they will not give you. For an individual the client list is the whole capacity of the supplier, so a refusal blocks the hours arithmetic above.
- No tool stack, or yours. If the crawler, rank tracker and link index sit on licenses you pay for, you are funding a professional seo firm’s overheads and lose the history when they leave.
- A guaranteed ranking, and this one hits us too. Nobody controls the result page, and an individual and an agency promising position one make the same unbackable claim.
- Reporting that leads with rankings, and this hits us too because we had to fix it. Our early reports led with rankings and traffic. Make every supplier you shortlist show you a month where nothing moved, us included.
Who does the work when the one person is not there
Continuity is the risk you take on when you buy a single supplier, and it is a fair risk as long as it is priced and planned. Three things make it survivable.
A named alternate. Most established independents have one or two people they trade cover with. Ask for the name, whether that person has worked on your account, and what they charge. An alternate who has never opened your site is a phone number rather than cover.
Documentation written while the work happens. One person does not need notes in order to work, so notes exist only if you insist. Ask for a living document holding decisions, access, tracking setup and the reasoning behind the last three.
Access that lives with you. An individual who created your Analytics property under a personal address is a single point of failure with no support desk. Everything else you still have to settle in writing, notice period, content ownership, the out-of-scope rate and what transfers when you leave, belongs in the contract.
One part of this runs in your favor, and comparing fairly means printing it. With one person there is no handover between account managers and no month where a new starter learns your account. Continuity of knowledge is what an individual is better at, and the trade is continuity of availability.
When you need a technical specialist rather than a generalist
Most independents are generalists by necessity, because one person selling into a broad market has to cover the whole surface. That is right for most sites and wrong for four situations, where a generalist is competent and still too slow.
- A migration or a replatform. Redirect mapping, parity checks, staging crawls and a rollback plan are their own discipline, and the cost of getting it wrong arrives all at once.
- A site that renders in JavaScript. Whether a crawler sees your content depends on how and when the page is built, which needs somebody who reads the rendered output and the server response.
- Crawl budget on a large site. Faceted navigation, parameter handling and log file analysis only pay for themselves past a certain number of URLs, and below that a technical seo services company sells you what you do not need.
- Vertical depth. Regulated markets carry rules about what you may claim and a competitor set nothing like retail, and our breakdown of what belongs in a law firm SEO audit shows how far the checklist moves.
To tell a specialist from a generalist with the same tools, ask what they would look at first, then what they would refuse to touch. A specialist is narrow on the first answer and long on the second.
When you need output rather than direction
There is a point where a single supplier stops being the right shape, and it has nothing to do with your budget. It is about how much has to get built.
Volume is the first signal. Twenty pages written, reviewed and published in a quarter is production work, and twenty-nine hours a month of senior time cannot contain it however good the senior is.
Bench depth is the second. Technical, content and links are three separate jobs and almost nobody is strong at all three. An individual excellent at two will be honest about the third, which leaves you owning the seam. Two middle options exist, seo consulting firms and seo services firms, which carry several senior people and no production line, so they solve bench depth without volume.
Several properties is the third. Two brands, three sites and a support subdomain is a coordination problem before it is a search problem. An in-house team is the fourth, and it runs the other way, because two marketers and a developer make a plan-only engagement work while a full-service supplier bills you for your own payroll.
If you recognized your situation in the first three, you have just ruled yourself out of the consultant route, and the next read is what to check before you hand the whole channel to a team. Our SEO services page is where to go next.
Where a consultant beats us, and when to hire one instead
Here is the situation where you should hire the consultant and not us, as a recommendation rather than a caveat.
You have a marketing manager or a developer in-house with at least a day a week that is genuinely protected. Your site is technically sound and was built in the last few years. You can name the problem, usually that your pages are not specific enough or that nobody has owned search for a year. In that situation, hire the consultant. You need direction and a review rhythm, you already own the production, and a retainer from us would bill you for people you pay salaries to. Ask for a scoped diagnosis first, then a smaller monthly figure for review.
The same recommendation holds in one more case. If your problem is a single deep technical fault, a migration, a rendering issue, an indexing collapse, buy a specialist for a scoped project. A retainer would be us selling twelve months of attention for something that ends in six weeks.
What we would do first. We would not shortlist anybody until a diagnosis existed, because every route here gets chosen on what is actually wrong. Buy the diagnosis as its own purchase. At the most common one-off band GoodFirms reports, $2,501 to $5,000, a paid audit costs less than one wrong quarter of a $3,250 retainer, which is $9,750.
Whatever you decide, run the three fit test questions before the pitch and write down which route you are buying. If you want the diagnosis from us, start with a free website audit.
